Feeding mistakes casefile 4,

Respiratory problems in parrots and other birds

The primary causes of respiratory problems in parrots/birds are structural nutritional deficiencies. In 1979, Professor P. Zwart, Professor of Pathology of Exotic Animals, published his findings from tissue research on parrots and birds with nutritional deficiencies.

Severe abnormalities were found in the mucous membranes and skin. This involves hyperkeratosis, in which abnormal cells are formed that give rise to proliferations. Additionally, abnormal feathers are produced and the molting process is disrupted.

Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the immune system is compromised, making parrots/birds more vulnerable to infections such as aspergillosis.

Forty-seven years ago, Prof. Zwart demonstrated the consequences of feeding seed mixtures to parrots/birds. As of 2026, nutritional errors remain the primary cause of health problems and premature death in parrots/birds. A sad situation that, unfortunately, applies not only to birds but also to humans.

  • Photos 2 and 3: Hyperkeratosis in the nose of a Grey Parrot before and after the growths were removed.
