Dr. Jan Hooimeijer, avian veterinarian, graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, in 1982. From 1983 until his retirement as a practicing avian veterinarian, owner of the Clinic for Birds and in 2013 founded the Bird Consultancy 'Advisory practice for birds'. His focus is on preventing health, behavioral and welfare problems.
Dr. Hooimeijer is a certified parrot behavior consultant, a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the AAV Welfare Committee, the AAV Conservation Committee, and a member of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology and member of the European Association of Avian Veterinarians (EAAV)
His work includes the development of the Dutch 5-Step Behavioral Protocol to create a relationship based on mutual respect and trust. This protocol serves as a tool for preventing, addressing, and resolving behavioral problems. In addition, Drs. Jan Hooimeijer has formulated definitions for normal, desired, undesirable, and forced behavior. The definition of displacement behavior, as discovered and described by Prof. Niko Tinbergen, one of the founders of ethology, plays a significant role. Thanks to these definitions, "behavior" can be recognized and understood, making it clear how best to respond to it.
It is remarkable that both the behavioral protocol and the behavioral definitions are fully applicable to parrots/animals and (human) children. Thanks to ethology, the boundaries between human and non-human animals, and between non-human animals, are blurring.
Jan Hooimeijer has been a popular speaker and guest speaker at various symposia and events at home and abroad for many years. His program "Preventing Health, Behavior, and Welfare Problems" is extremely popular among veterinary students and practitioners. It has inspired many veterinary students to apply their knowledge. Veterinary students have also been motivated to address the health and welfare problems of birds.
