Article about cats in Dier en Arts

In 2023, I wrote an article for Dier en Arts on the subject of the stray cat, the wolf, and the veterinarian.

The free-roaming cat, the wolf, and the veterinarian.
This article argues that there is a striking difference in how society deals with the wolf and the free-roaming cat.

While the wolf receives much political attention as a protected species, the free-roaming cat, according to the author, is largely tolerated as an invasive exotic species. Cats are said to cause damage to nature, biodiversity, and public health, among other things by killing protected animals and spreading diseases such as toxoplasmosis and toxocariasis.

I emphasize that legislation already makes it clear that owners are responsible for the welfare and behavior of their animals, but that cat owners often evade this responsibility by letting their animals roam freely outdoors. Veterinarians are also said to fall short in this regard by failing to adequately inform owners about this responsibility. Additionally, letting cats roam free leads to societal problems, such as traffic accidents, shelter costs, and tensions between neighbors.

The core of the argument is that current policy and the attitude of both owners and professionals are inadequate, and that more awareness, enforcement, and clear guidelines are needed to better protect the interests of animals, nature, and society.
